Bamboula

This unassuming restaurant opposite Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton, is known all over London for its fantastic Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine. Named after a form of Caribbean folk music, this eaterie offers a variety of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, all made with the vibrant flavours of the Caribbean.

There is a lengthy list of main meals with accompanying side orders ranging from plain rice to succulent Caribbean delicacies. On receiving a recommendation from the waiter, I ordered the chef’s chicken with rice and peas. The chicken was very lightly spiced, with a sauce slammed-full of flavour. I was delighted with my choice, though all the dishes looked equally inviting; I had to refrain from asking every other diner what they had ordered. I’m sure I’ll be visiting again in the not-too-distant future to find out.

The cosy size of Bamboula and it’s high reputation in the area ensures it’s usually quite busy, but no matter how busy, the food always seems to arrive moments after you’ve ordered. The service is as highly-renowned as the flavours and I, for one, was not disappointed; a great dining experience.

Mains: All main meals are priced between £5 to £10, and cater for almost every taste (even vegetarians). The jerk chicken is a crowd-pleaser.

Drinks:  Bamboula have an inviting cocktail menu (all cocktails £3.50) as well as the usual selection of beers, spirits and wines.
